Open a photo, scan or screenshot of a page and its printed English or Hindi text is read in this tab and saved as a Word document: paragraphs, headings judged from the type size, line breaks and page breaks. Layout, tables, fonts and pictures are not reproduced. Nothing is uploaded.

Printed English and Hindi. The reader (7.0 MB for English, plus 1.4 MB for Hindi) is served by this site and runs in your browser; it loads only when you press Read.

How the Word file is made

The picture is read by Tesseract in this tab, line by line, with each line’s box and the paragraph it belongs to. You correct the text in the editor. When you press Download, the page turns that text into Word paragraphs — a blank line starts a new paragraph, a single line break stays a line break — and any line that was printed clearly larger than the body and stands alone becomes Heading 1 or Heading 2. The document is written as Office Open XML and zipped in the browser.

If the picture is a photo of a paper page rather than a screenshot, tick the clean-up options: the page is found against the desk, straightened and evened out before it is read, which helps the reader more than anything else.

What it will not do

  • It does not reproduce layout, tables, fonts, colours or pictures. The Word file holds text.
  • It does not read handwriting.
  • It does not open PDFs; this page opens pictures.

Questions people ask

Is my picture uploaded to make the Word file?

No. The text is read by Tesseract in a worker in this tab, and the .docx is assembled in this tab too — a Word file is a small bundle of XML files, and this page writes them itself. Nothing is sent to a converter.

What ends up in the Word document?

The text you see in the editor, as you have corrected it: paragraphs, line breaks inside paragraphs, headings and page breaks. A line printed noticeably bigger than the body text (1.4 times the usual line height or more), standing on its own, becomes a Word heading. Each added page starts on a new page.

Will it look like the original page?

No, and it does not pretend to. Layout, columns side by side, tables, fonts, colours and pictures are not reproduced. You get the words, in reading order, in a document you can edit and style. For the words alone, that is usually what you wanted.

Does it work for Hindi?

Yes, for printed Hindi. Choose “Hindi and English” (or let the page ask when it sees Devanagari). The Word file holds Unicode Devanagari — not a legacy Kruti Dev encoding — and names Mangal as the font, which Word on Windows has; other systems substitute their own Devanagari font.

Can I convert several pictures into one Word file?

Yes. Read the first one, then press “Add the next page” for each of the others. They are read with the same settings and the Word file starts each on a new page.

Does it open in Google Docs and LibreOffice?

It is a standard Office Open XML document with a Normal style and two heading styles, which Word, LibreOffice Writer and Google Docs all open.
